confession

Last night I hit a dog with my car. I was driving on a heavy travel three lane road. I was doing about 40 and the dog walked out in front of my car. I slammed on my breaks, but it was too late. I was doing about 20 when I hit the dog. I was in the middle lane so it was not safe for me to stop. I pulled into a parking lot and walked back to where I hit the dog. I searched for about 10 minutes. I could not find the dog anywhere. There was no blood on the front of my car either.

Did if fulfill my responsibility to that dog or should I have looked longer?

feel bad every time I think about this dog. Has anyone ever hit an animal with their car?
